A message from our founder (Honorary Director)

Wanting every patient to receive dental care on equal terms

This may take a moment, but please let me share what first drove me to devote myself to dentistry for patients with disabilities.

I have an older sister who lives with a disability. Back then, there were no dental clinics that a wheelchair could even enter, and I watched with my own eyes how, even with a toothache, she could not get treatment that met her needs. The strong conviction I held then — “I want to use my own hands to help people who are struggling because they want to see a dentist but cannot” — is the biggest reason I set out on the path of dentistry.

More than 30 years ago, before I opened my own practice, treatment for patients with disabilities, and even the very concept of “home-visit dental care”, were far from common in society. People around me pushed back too, saying things like “the risk is too high” or “there’s no need to go that far”, but I never stopped believing that there were patients out there waiting for help, so I started out on my own, learning as I went.

After that, to be able to provide safe, reliable treatment, I threw myself into study and training, and became the first dentist in Aichi Prefecture to earn certification from the Japanese Society for Disability and Oral Health. All of it came from a single conviction — that every patient, whatever condition their body is in, deserves to receive dental care on equal terms.

Oral health is closely tied to overall health and to the joy of living. At ハミール, we have built a dedicated team so that every patient who needs special consideration can receive treatment feeling reassured.

Thirty years after opening, our clinic is now visited by many patients with disabilities. This relationship of trust is my greatest source of pride, and I hope to keep being a dental clinic that the people of this community, and their families, can continue to rely on with confidence.

3 features of our dentistry for patients with disabilities

A gentle approach using behavior modification techniques

Every patient with a disability has their own way of communicating that works best for them, and their own pace for getting used to treatment. We use psychological approaches such as easy-to-understand visual “picture cards”, the “Tell-Show-Do (TSD)” method of showing and explaining instruments before using them, a “counting method” that lets patients know when a procedure will end by counting aloud, and “systematic desensitization”, which builds up tolerance gradually starting from simple exercises — gently easing away panic and fear while moving treatment forward with care.

Introducing relaxing “nitrous oxide sedation”

For patients who feel intense fear or stress from the sounds or atmosphere of a dental clinic, we offer “nitrous oxide inhalation sedation” (nitrous oxide sedation). Breathing in a safe, sweet-smelling gas through the nose brings on a gentle, relaxed feeling, easing fear and tension. Unlike general anesthesia, patients remain conscious throughout, completing treatment safely and comfortably.

A trusted “Japanese Society for Disability and Oral Health certified facility”

歯科ハミール in Handa City is one of a small number of clinics nationwide certified as a “Japanese Society for Disability and Oral Health certified facility (clinical experience facility)” — recognized for its specialized knowledge and equipment. Not just the treating dentist but every staff member regularly attends academic conferences and training, keeping our knowledge and skills continually up to date. Because an experienced, specialized team provides your care, please feel free to visit us even if treatment has been difficult at other clinics.
