Denture Treatment

歯科ハミール

When you lose an important tooth to a cavity, periodontal disease, or another cause, a “denture (removable prosthesis)” is one of the most common options.

But we often hear real, heartfelt struggles from people actually wearing dentures — things like “I’m afraid it’ll fall out while eating,” “my gums hurt when I bite into meat,” or “it’s too thick and hard to talk with.” Forcing yourself to keep using a denture that doesn’t fit puts excessive strain on your remaining, precious natural teeth, making them more likely to come loose, and can also cause mouth ulcers or growths from rubbing against the gums, worsening your whole oral environment.

What’s more, a misaligned bite can bring on body-wide discomfort like stiff shoulders and neck or headaches, and chewing poorly puts extra strain on your stomach and intestines. 歯科ハミール in Handa doesn’t just “fill a gap” — we focus on crafting a denture that truly fits each patient, one that lets you “enjoy your food and smile with confidence.” If you’re struggling with the denture you’re wearing now, please feel free to come talk to us anytime.

Dentures

Types of dentures we offer

Broadly, we propose the option that best suits your wishes and budget from two angles.

① Difference in material: insured (resin) / out-of-pocket (clasp-free dentures with no metal clasps, or thin, sturdy metal-based dentures in titanium or cobalt-chrome)
② Difference in extent of missing teeth: partial denture (removable partial denture) / full denture (complete denture)

Pros and cons of denture treatment

Advantages

Unlike an implant, no surgery is needed, and treatment can be completed in a relatively short time. You can also remove it yourself for a thorough clean, which makes it easier to keep your mouth hygienic.

Disadvantages

Because it covers the mucous membrane inside your mouth, it tends to feel foreign until you get used to it. Also, chewing strength will inevitably be somewhat weaker than with natural teeth, and it takes daily effort to put in, take out, and clean.

Proper use and daily care of dentures

  • When you first get a denture, or right after switching to a new one, start with soft foods like tofu and gradually work up to harder foods.
  • Take your denture out when you sleep, so your gums and mucous membranes get a rest.
  • When cleaning it, rinse it under running water while gently brushing with a dedicated brush. (*Regular toothpaste contains abrasives that can scratch the surface and encourage bacterial growth, so please don’t use it. Also, to prevent warping, be sure to avoid sterilizing it in hot water. If you’re concerned about invisible buildup or odor, an over-the-counter denture cleanser works very well.)
  • If a denture dries out, it can crack or warp. When it’s out, store it soaking in water, and when you’re out and about, carry it in a dedicated case.
  • For other parts such as the clasps, please follow your dentist’s and hygienist’s guidance and take good care of your denture.

About “discomfort” when you first start wearing one

No matter how precise the impression, just like new shoes can rub your feet raw, a new denture can put excessive pressure on part of your gum from biting force right after you first put it in, causing pain. This is by no means a sign that it was made wrong.
To arrive at a denture that truly feels like it “clings to your jaw” — a perfect fit — you need to actually wear it and have us grind down and fine-tune the sore spots little by little; this process is essential. Please don’t rush it — through several adjustments (typically around 4 to 5), let’s finish a comfortable denture made just for you.

The difference between “insured dentures” and “out-of-pocket dentures”

Insured denture (resin)

Advantages

Health insurance applies, keeping the cost low. It also takes less time to complete, and repairs are relatively simple if it breaks.

Disadvantages

To keep it strong, the resin part has to be made thick, which can make your mouth feel cramped and foreign. Because it conducts heat poorly, it’s hard to feel the temperature of your food, and the material itself tends to pick up odors and buildup. With a partial denture, the metal clasps are also noticeable.

Out-of-pocket denture (metal-based, clasp-free, etc.)

Advantages

Free from insurance restrictions, high-quality materials can be used without limitation. Because it’s very thin and light, it feels less foreign, and you can clearly feel the temperature of your food. Styles with no metal clasps look attractive, and are less likely to be noticed as a denture by others.

Disadvantages

Since insurance doesn’t apply, the cost burden is inevitably larger. Also, because of the special construction and materials used, if it ever breaks, it can’t be repaired on-site right away — sometimes it has to be left with us for repair, which takes some time.

FAQ about dentures

Q1. About how many visits does a new denture take?

For a partial denture replacing only a few teeth, it can sometimes be finished in as few as 2 visits: ① taking an impression and confirming the bite ② finishing and fitting.

When more teeth are missing, or for a full denture, we follow a more careful process.
① Overall exam and a simple impression ② A precise impression using a custom tray ③ Precise recording of bite height and relationship ④ Try-in of a wax trial denture (checking tooth alignment and facial appearance) ⑤ Fitting the completed denture ⑥ Several rounds of pain adjustment
The whole process takes about 1 to 1.5 months, and we take the time to get every detail right.

Q2. I’m worried my speech will sound unnatural once I have a denture.

Because the volume inside your mouth changes, it’s natural to feel that your tongue moves less freely at first, and certain sounds may become less clear. That said, with daily practice such as reading aloud, most patients speak smoothly again in about a month. Choosing a thin, out-of-pocket metal-based denture reduces that foreign feeling even further.

Q3. I don’t want people around me to notice, “oh, that’s a denture.”

Very many patients find the obvious “silver metal clasps” on an insured partial denture noticeable and worrying. It does require out-of-pocket treatment, but choosing a “clasp-free denture,” held in place with special pink resin that matches your gum color, means no metal parts show even when you laugh out loud, keeping a very natural look to your mouth. Please feel free to ask us about it anytime.

Q4. Once I have a full denture, I don’t need regular checkups anymore, right?

No — regular checkups are very important even for full-denture patients. The gums and jawbone that form the foundation supporting your denture gradually shrink and change shape as you age. Continuing to use a denture that no longer fits can injure the mucous membrane, and in very rare cases can even become a factor behind oral cancer. Also, to clear away the invisible bacteria that build up on the denture itself and to adjust your bite balance, please be sure to come in every 4 months.

Q5. My denture cracked! Can I glue it with an over-the-counter quick-set adhesive?

Please, whatever you do, don’t! Over-the-counter adhesives aren’t designed for use inside the mouth and can sometimes contain harmful ingredients. Also, if you sand or glue it yourself even a little, it may become impossible to repair properly afterward, and you could end up having to have a whole new denture made from scratch. If it breaks or cracks, please don’t do anything to it — just bring it to us exactly as it is.
